Genesis Scottish Open: A Full Field Preparation for the Open Championship
A look at some Reignmakers options for the Renaissance Club
Before we look into this week’s contest, let’s take a look at last week:
Sepp Straka ($1.55, offer at $0.90) - T61
JT Poston ($1.35, offer at $0.73) - T30
Denny McCarthy ($0.98, offer at $0.71) - T7
Adam Svensson ($0.40, offer at $0.22) - T34
Seamus Power ($0.37, offer at $0.20 - 17
Adam Schenk ($0.31, offer at $0.20) - MC
Joel Dahmen ($0.27, no offer) - T46
Jhonny Vegas ($0.26, no offer) - T20
Lee Hodges ($0.24, no offer) - 77
From a made cut perspective at a high vol event, I’m pretty happy with this result as far as getting your teams through with 6 of 6 but some higher results would have been nice. The T20 from Vegas was likely helpful for teams at a very discounted price.
Anyways on to the Genesis Scottish Open (remember, early lock times due to the time difference this week):

The Renaissance Club is described as an American’s take on links golf. As such, it doesn’t really play like a traditional links course but the one thing that has been prevalent is a wide range of conditions. The fairways aren’t super punitive off the tee so length is really advantageous here. The greens are also large and it is one of the easiest courses around the green. However, the greens are tricky with a lot of undulation so having a good putter is key here. Iron play is always key but you can get away with it a bit here.
Let’s look at some options for this week:
Collin Morikawa ($3.75, offer at $2.21)
Ludvig Aberg ($3.60, offer at $3.00)
Both Morikawa and Aberg are going for more than half the cost of Rory or Xander so this is more a discount on a relative basis. Both are playing very well right now, with Morikawa rediscovering his short game and putting up strong results against the strongest fields; with an Open Championship to his name, he certainly isn’t against this part of the world. Ludvig is still so early in his career we don’t really have a sense for how he will do but his stat fit is tremendous.
Tommy Fleetwood ($1.49, offer at $0.70)
Fleetwood has nice course history here that should be priced up from this level and his all round game has faired well so far in 2024.
Tom Kim ($1.44, offer at $0.47)
Kim has had very good success at this course as well as a 2nd place finish at last year’s Open Championship. His length has continued to improve and his iron play and short game continue to be strengths. The MC at Detroit likely depressed his pricing a bit but this is likely a fair price for him.
Viktor Hovland ($1.21, offer at $0.76)
Renaissance Club should setup very well for Viktor, whose short game has fallen off a bit after his improvements in 2023. He’s long and straight from tee to green and can get hot; he had a top 25 here last year to go with some good Open results the last 2 years. I could see him winning this event.
Wyndham Clark ($1.00, offer at $0.55)
Clark’s game has fallen off after his early season wins and Scheffler runner-ups but this course sets up will for his driver which can sometimes penalize him on tighter courses but shouldn’t here. He is also a good putter and has had some good results here in the past 2 years.
Corey Conners ($0.95, offer at $0.34)
Conners elite tee to green game has continued in 2024 but the recent change is he has had some good short game and putting results, which have been his Achilles heal historically. He has improved on this course each year for the last 3, cracking the top 20 last year.
Benny An ($0.79, offer at $0.34)
An had a T3 here last year and has been having a strong year, aided by his length off the tee. The putter has been better this year and at this price you aren’t paying much for a guy with top 5 upside.
Brian Harman ($0.62, offer at $0.28)
A bit of a counter intuitive due to his lack of length, Harman makes up for it with great long iron play and a very strong short game. He is following up his Championship Golfer of the Year with some very good results this year as well as a T12 at last year’s Scottish Open. The price is just too low to not take advantage, as he will likely be involved in all aspects of the Fedex Playoffs as well.
Thomas Detry ($0.53, offer at $0.24)
Detry has had good results here, even before his improvement in iron play this year. He is very long off the tee and a very good putter as well. This is a substantial discount to what he should provide.
